Women of color are dying from domestic violence at higher rates than other women. “We’re up to nearly 175 non-fatal shootings of women. Ninety percent are African American women, so we need to find out what was happening days, weeks, and minutes leading up to the near-fatal event,” said Antonia Drew-Norton of the Asha Group. She says the reason domestic violence shows up more in communities of color is that there are other issues present such as poverty, health care disparities, and mental health resources. However, the fact remains that black women, the very backbone of our community, are not being cherished as they should be and in many cases being targeted by those whose very job is to protect them. In this year’s calendar theme A Nation Can Rise No Higher Than Its Women, we highlight the strength and resilience of black women and girls with a simple call to action - PROTECT WOMEN AT ALL COSTS. Our nation’s future depends on it. The 2023 calendar features prolific poetry penned by some of the best in the art of spoken and written word including Muhibb Dyer, Kwabena Antoine Nixon, Dafi Dyer, Anthony Ross, Dr. Kweku Ramel Smith, Melissa "Blue" Muhammad, Shawn "Gat Turner" Muhammad and Princess (Ameerah) Malik. It has been used in various workshops at schools, religious organizations, and juvenile detention centers nationwide as both a teaching tool as well as inspirational gifts. This project has allowed us to award The Children Are Crying Ishmael Matthews Scholarship each year for the past 20 years. This year’s calendar was produced with the generous support from the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation. To order "add to cart" or call/text 414-793-6346
